There's a new beer festival coming, Des Moines, and it's celebrating all things lager.

Hessen Haus at 101 S.W. 4th St., in downtown Des Moines, will host the inaugural Lager Fest on Sept. 1 from 4-10 p.m. The event will (of course) showcase lagers, a light-style beer made using a cool fermentation process.

The festival will feature a variety of lagers from breweries in Des Moines, as well brews from around the U.S., England and Germany. Admission is free with 10 beer tickets available for $30 (8-ounce pours).

Featured breweries

“Lager is the best selling beer in the world, but there is more to the story,” said Jeff Bruning, co-owner of Hessen Haus. "Many breweries are making craft lagers and they come in many different styles and colors — including pitch black."

Take advantage of these updated local dining guides:

Lager is brewed by slow fermentation and then conditioned under very cool temperatures over four to 10 weeks. The results are a more effervescent, crisp, sweet and smooth finished product. Lager Fest will feature many varieties of lagers for attendees to compare and enjoy.

Festival highlights

"The event will be a great party, but also a chance to educate beer fans about lagers,” Bruning said.

Hessen Haus, which is part of the Full Court Press family of Des Moines restaurants, has the feel of an old-world German bier hall featuring 21 imported German beers on tap, authentic German fare and live music — including local bands and regional polka.
